Overview: This Winding Ways Quilting Template is made of acrylic material with a thickness of 3mm. It is designed to help you cut and assemble 12" finished quilt blocks. The template includes black line markings for clear guidance during use. Protective Film: The acrylic surface comes with a protective film. Before using the template, you can peel off the film to get a clearer, more transparent view of your fabric and cutting lines. Fabric Requirements (for one 72" x 72" finished quilt): This template set is intended for a finished quilt size of 72 inches by 72 inches, using 6 rows of blocks and 6 blocks per row. Step-by-Step Instructions Included: Step 1 – Cut Align the grainline arrow on the template with your fabric’s straight grain to help prevent stretching. The template includes a standard 1/4" seam allowance. No extra fabric is needed beyond this allowance. For each block, cut: 4 pieces of shape A, 4 pieces of shape B, and 4 pieces of shape C. Make 18 blocks of Block 1 (main + accent fabric) and 18 blocks of Block 2 (accent + main fabric). Cut matching notches along the template slots to help with precise alignment during sewing. Step 2 – Make 36 Blocks Sew piece A to piece B along the curved edge, matching the notches. Use a 1/4" seam allowance. Then add piece C to the center of the A/B unit, aligning the notches, to make one A/B/C segment. Join 4 of these segments to form one finished 12" block. Press all seams toward the darker fabric. Repeat this process to make a total of 36 blocks (18 of each colorway: Block 1 and Block 2). Step 3 – Sew Rows Arrange the blocks into 6 rows with 6 blocks per row to achieve a 72" x 72" finished quilt. For odd rows (1, 3, 5): Alternate Block 1, Block 2, Block 1, Block 2, Block 1, Block 2. For even rows (2, 4, 6): Alternate Block 2, Block 1, Block 2, Block 1, Block 2, Block 1. Sew each row together, then press flat immediately after sewing each row. Step 4 – Join Rows & Finish Sew the 6 rows together in top-to-bottom order. Carefully align block corners and seam allowances to help create a smooth, even quilt top. Press after each vertical seam. After all rows are joined, press the entire quilt top flat. Trim edges to a neat 72" x 72". The quilt top is then ready for batting, backing, and binding. Important Tip: Always align the template arrow with the fabric grain. The template already includes the 1/4" seam allowance, so do not add extra. Press every seam toward the darker fabric and follow the checkerboard layout strictly, otherwise the winding visual effect will not appear.
